Have you ever braved the shops on Black Friday? Or grabbed some online bargains on Cyber Monday? What about Giving Tuesday, the latest holiday tradition, which calls on people to give something back to their local community? If not, this year is your opportunity to get involved.
In the four weeks leading up to Giving Tuesday (starting November 4), we’re asking people to raise money to get CHiPS through the winter, our busiest time of the year. Your fundraising efforts could be anything from a cake sale, to a raffle, to a sports tournament. It could even just be a donation box in your store or local club.
Where will the money raised go? Well, to give you an idea, with just $25, we can feed 15 guests at our soup kitchen. With $75, we can provide a week’s shelter for a homeless young mother, her newborn and a toddler. Homeless rates in New York are up this year, so we expect to be even busier than usual. No donation is too small, because if everyone “CHiPS in,” we can collectively make a huge difference.
Are you up to the challenge? Here’s what to do. Organize your fundraising event. If you want some inspiration, this A to Z guide might be helpful. Please make sure to take lots of pictures and share them with us on Twitter and Facebook, mentioning #GivingTuesday and #ChipIn. If you don’t use Twitter or Facebook, you can send them to firstname.lastname@example.org. We’ll be writing about your fundraising efforts on our blog and social media channels, so we want to hear about what you’ve been up to.
Once you’ve had your fundraiser, you can either donate the money directly on our website or you can write a check (to Park Slope Christian Help) and send it to CHiPS, 200 4th Ave., Brooklyn, NY 11217-3180. You’ll even get the chance to come down and find out more about how the money you’ve raised is used – on the evening of Giving Tuesday itself, we’ll be hosting a CHiPS open house, with food and drink. We’re still planning the details, but more information will follow soon.
We’ve already planned our first fundraising event, which will be an evening of fun and games at the Royal Palms Shuffleboard Club on November 9. But now it’s over to you. So what are you waiting for? Get fundraising!
